March 6, 1929

“Funeral services for Captain Eugene Y Handlan, 89, Civil War Veteran and steamboat captain, will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m from the Charles A Smith Sons’ funeral home, 325 E Fourth-st., Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Handlan, formerly of Newport, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. David C Spaulding, Cleveland, O."

They say "dead men tell no tales."

I hope that's not true, for if it is, this blog will not have much material.

My name is Richard McCormick and I have published a blog called My Civil War Obsession for over a year. One passion that I have just rediscovered is looking for headstones of Civil War veterans and finding out some of the stories of these veterans' lives. Sometimes, it's just their obituaries, but other times I find some other interesting stories of their lives. I published a couple on my Obsession, and have a few more for which I am currently looking for some more information.

I thought it might be nice to have one forum where I could focus solely on these types of stories, so I started this new blog. With so many men and women having been affected by the war, I think focusing on a few of these individual "mini-biographies" will provide

I will still publish the Obsession, and it will be updated more frequently than this one, but I have a feeling this one will require more legwork and research. It may be harder to find material here, but I have a feeling there is a lot of good stuff out there just waiting for someone to find it. Why not me?

Please visit my slideshow of many of the pictures I have so far. I do have duplicates of some headstones, just to help me try to read some of them.
